John's A-380 Flight
AS REGULAR KHO NEWS Readers would know, John booked last Oct. to fly the new Singapore Airlines (SQ) Airbus Super Jumbo A-380 from Sydney to Singapore on Aug 19, 2008.
John's SQ Booking
Call Singapore Airlines - "there has been a seat change"
FRIEND DENNY in Melbourne emailed to say that Singapore Airlines had phoned and could I return the call, because there "has
been a seat change." I thought before going to all the expense of calling Australia, (calls are very expensive from Indonesia) I would check my booking on the Singapore Airlines web site.
I was horrified to find that the aircraft operating my booked flight was no longer the Airbus A-380 but
a Boeing 747-400. I was D'pressed, D'jected and D'suicidal.
On closer inspection I noticed the A-380 was still doing the SYD-SIN run but the aircraft had been changed to Flight SQ 222 departing daily at 15:25 EST and arriving in Singapore at 21:40 Singapore time. I found out later that this is due to the inauguration of the first Singapore Airlines A-380 Singapore-Tokyo service, which starts May 20. I noted while checking the site that if I took the
later flight, I would arrive in Singapore too late for a flight on toDenpasar, Bali. The next flight was at 09:30 the next day. Also I noticed, to my horror to change to that combination would cost me
A$ 941.54 extra. Plus A$50 change fee. Plus faced with spending the night at Changi airport or having to find a hotel for just a few  hours.
We Call SQ Australia
I called Singapore Airlines in Australia, after 7 minutes of "push button 1-2 or 3, for this, and 1, 2 or 3" for that and then ages of Jumbo Jet landing music, I finally got to an operator. I explained the story of how I was only flying to Singapore to ride the Airbus A-380. The polite, operator said, Sir we have the right to change aircraft. He said we have known for some time that the aircraft will be changed in May.
I said but when I booked the web site specified the A-380 and it is even printed on my e-ticket, is that not a contract?
The operator then said you will have to go to the SQ web site and change your flight to the afternoon A-380 flight. I said but that will cost me A$ 941.54 extra. Plus a A$ 50 internet booking change fee.  He said sorry Sir, there is nothing I can do. I said, I don't think it is fair that I should have to pay A$ 991.54 extra, because you changed the aircraft. I bought the ticket in good

faith believing that I would be flying on the A-380, I can't afford to pay that extra amount and I'm not at all interested in flying all the way to Sydney, then Singapore on an old Boeing 747, then back to Bali, best I cancel and just fly JetStar to Bali.
$220 Cancellation Fee
The operator said certainly Sir we can do that for you, we just subtract a $220 cancellation fee from your refund. What!, I thought to myself, that means including the JetStar ticket to Sydney I will be minus A$ 300 plus. I said to the operator, I know my ticket has a $220 cancellation fee, but I think in this case it should be waived, because it is Singapore Airlines that changed the aircraft, why should I pay when you can't deliver?
The operator tried to sound understanding and then said, could you hold on, I will speak to my supervisor and see if we can help.
Some 8 minutes later he came back on line and said we may be able to do something, a Singapore Airlines representative will call you in Bali tomorrow. The call finished, just under half an hour, costing upwards of $50.
Insomnia
That night I barely slept, I had been so looking forward to the Airbus
A-380 flight and at my age there are not many things that can stimulate youthful excitement like that has for me. How sad if I can't do the flight that I had been dreaming about.
John A-380 Dreaming
The Next Day
We waited and waited and waited some more, then finally at around 3 pm an operator, who gave his name as Darren, from Singapore Airlines rang from Australia.
No joy, the same story, re-book on the 15:25 A-380 flight and the next day 09:30 flight, sorry we cannot include a hotel, you pay A$ 941.54 extra, plus a A$ 50 re-booking fee. Darren said we are sorry, with an on line booking we can do nothing, you just change it your self.
I complained bitterly, Darren was sympathetic and said he understands that I wanted to fly on the A-380 but there was nothing more he could do - End of call
SQ Ring Back
Fifteen minutes later Darren rings back from Singapore Airlines and says he has discovered if I book the afternoon 16:40-19:10 flight to Bali on the next day the 20th, I will only
have to pay the $50 change fee. Although not an ideal conclusion, I though, well $50 is far better than  $ 991.54 or a $ 220 cancellation fee.
We're Back on the A380
I log on to the Singapore Airlines web site to change the booking, when the price appears it is not $50, but an extra $55.54 for the ticket. Well I guess better than $991.54. And I even got the same seat.
We now just hope and pray SQ
don't change the aircraft again.

Summary
Although the SQ operator said they (SQ) reserve the right to change aircraft, try as I may I cannot find any reference to flight change in any of the fine print on the web site or on my e-ticket. One could possibly argue that SQ have  misrepresented themselves here,
because on
their web site
they specify the
aircraft operating
the  flight offered.
Qantas, JetStar, Air Asia and Tiger
Snapshot from SIA Web Site
don't. The flight I purchased specifically offered the Airbus A-380
and  "A380" was printed on my
e-ticket. Is it unreasonable to expect that if one buys a product, one expects it will be delivered? We have sent a polite letter of complaint
to Mr Chew, CEO of SQ.
Singapore Airlines Boss Steps Down
Singapore Airlines Boss and CEO Mr Chew Choon Seng has been reported as very annoyed about having to step down, not from
the over publicized "John Duped" scandal, but every time he deplanes from the new Airbus A-380.  Apparently the engineers had a misunderstanding with Airbus about the door step height of the A-380. Subsequently the specially prebuilt aerobridges at the new A-380 Terminal Three at Changi are a foot lower that the airbus doorstep requiring passengers to perilously step down as they leave the aircraft
The Offending Aerobridge
Singapore Airlines claim it is Airbus' fault and they should fix the problem. Airbus being terribly market sensitive since the long hold-ups and delays with the A-380 have announced a solution.
All future production aircraft will be fitted with smaller wheels so they will be compatible with the Changi aerobridges, previously built A-380 aircraft will be retrofitted with the new wheels when their next service  is due.      ......... Pull the other one.

Bali in the Dark Again
A Power Black-out at the KHO
TEMPO APR 14: Bali is again facing power shortages because of breakdowns and maintenance at power stations in Java and at the main Bali power station in Bali at  Gilimanuk. Bali is connected to Java by an undersea cable which supplies 70% of Bali's power. A ten-day maintenance program at Gilimanuk will cause a 40 MW shortfall in power supply for the Island of Bali. The reduced capacity has prompted the State Power Company (PLN) to place the entire Java-Bali power grid on an "alert status" until power is restored.
KHO Emergency Power
At the KHO we have our own battery emergency power system however it only provides electricity for a limited time. After back outs longer than 4 hours, we like every one else must resort to candles.
Karangasem Gastro Epidemic
BALI (Bali Discovery): Funds are now flowing to Karangasem Epidemic Victims. The epidemic of gastrointestinal illness has struck Bali's eastern regency of Karangasem causing more than 600 people to seek treatment and is now blamed for at least 7 deaths.
The ailment, known locally as "Muntaber," is characterized by vomiting, dehydration and acute diarrhoea and was first noticed by health officials on March 19th when a steady stream of patients began reporting to area hospitals and community health clinics. As the health crisis enters its fifth week, help is beginning to stream in with Rp 1 billion (US$108,700) in cash being funded by the provincial government of Bali together with substantial other cash donations from banks, state-owned enterprises and private companies.

A Pleasant Surprise
After cocktails at 6 pm we headed off to Puri Rai restaurant. I had not been to Puri Rai Restaurant for more than three years. Back then the food was overpriced and not as good at our favourite el-cheapo Warung Marina on the carpark. The staff were indifferent and the meals took ages to come.

On arriving, the staff were pleasant and very welcoming. Soon we had menu's and I was surprised to find everything was quite reasonable
Puri Rai's Chicken Bom
and there was an extensive selection from seafood, through chicken, to beef and pizza
Prices ranged from Rp 25,000 - Rp40,000 (~A$3-6). I had the Chicken Bom, which was actually Chicken Cordon Bleu at $A4.15. What a surprise, it was excellent. The KHO thoroughly recommends.

KHO BALI: This year world food prices have soared 70% due to failures of crops world wide, attributed by many to the effects of Global Warming and Bio Fuel.
RICE UP 30%
Enjoying Noodles
As always the poor of the world suffer most and Indonesia is no exception with many living on less
than US$2 per day.  In recent months the price of the poorest quality rice rising from Rp 3,500 to Rp 5,000 per Kg (A 60¢). The prices of wheat, the main ingredient in noodles has soared. Soya bean, used to make tempe and tofu have skyrocketed.
Tempe and tofu are very important for protein, chicken, beef or fish being unaffordable for the poor. Add to this the doubling of the price of cooking kerosene used by the poor people, to now over
Rp 5,000 (A60¢) per litre.
Over 37.17 Million Indonesians are starving
The rising prices will inevitably drive more Indonesians to join the 37.17 million people, or 16.58% of the population living below the  government set poverty line at Rp166,697 (A$19.50) per person per month or Rp 5,600 (A 67¢) per day.
Could you live on
67¢ per day?
Rising food prices have pushed up Indonesia's annual inflation to
8.17% in March. Reports say that overall food prices have increased by 30% in Bali alone. The poor can only cutback, many only having one meal a day and economizing by cutting out tempe tofu and green vegetables severely affecting the physical and especially the mental development of young children.
Self-sufficiency
In the 1980s,  Indonesia achieved self sufficiency in rice production. But later, the government's development program shifted from agriculture to industrialization, more and more rice fields were converted into factories and real estate, necessitating constant rice imports,
Vietnam Bans Exports
Vietnam, Indonesia's main supplier of rice (last year 1.3M tonnes) has recently banned all rice exports, as they too have a rice shortage crisis.
Government Action
The Indonesian government has taken several measures to deal with the problem, including increasing subsidized rice for poor families from 10kg to 15kg per month. Scrapping a 5% duty on imported flour and a 10% VAT on locally milled flour. They were forced to cut import taxes on soy beans, after thousands took to the streets in
Jakarta protesting rising prices. Sutarto Alimoeso, director-general of food crops at the Agriculture
Ministry expects rice production to exceed domestic consumption by two million tonnes this year. Henry Saragih, head of the Indonesian Farmers’ Union, blames the present woes on the government's long neglect of the agriculture sector.
SOCIAL UNREST
Hungry people are not happy people, social unrest can follow, with people attracted to terrorism to vent their frustration. The UN have already warned the West of this.
How You Can Help
Plan a holiday in Bali and have a good time. Stay in local hotels and eat in locally owned restaurants, avoid supermarkets, patronize local shops, buy local craft and don't bargain too hard. Use local drivers and guides. Not only will you save a fortune, your money will filter down to the villages and help Bali's poor buy much needed food.

Illegal Bali Villas
NUSA BALI: The "clean up" of hundreds of unlicensed villas operating as commercial ventures continues, with some six villas receiving visits by an inspection team each working day.
Typical Bali Villa
With the latest deadline of August 29, 2008 for finalization of permits looming ahead, the newspapers reports that hundreds of villas may soon face closure. The Head of the Tourism Department for the Badung Regency, Drs. I made Subawa, told Nusa Bali that he has done all within his power to encourage villa registration as his team continues to facilitate the villa registration process. Unfortunately, according to Subawa, of the nearly 300 unlicensed villas now on his office’s books, only 58 meet the basic licensing requirements with only 35 having actually obtaining permits.
Indonesia Election '09
JAKARTA: Indonesians will vote in parliamentary elections on April 5 next year, the election commission has said. No date has been set for the presidential poll which along with the parliamentary elections are held every five years. "We declare that we are ready to organize the 2009 elections," said commission chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary.
Indonesia held the country's first ever direct presidential election in 2004, which brought former general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to power.

It is believed Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will seek another term in the 2009 Presidential Elections.
The country has introduced a series of electoral reforms since the downfall of President Suharto in 1998. Suharto died in January at 86.

New Water Dispenser
KHO BALI: Two months ago our water dispenser stopped working, the second in 10 years. This time we tried to find a quality unit. After much surveying we settled on a Sanken 920 @ Rp1.4M (A$166).
The dispenser also has a nifty little refrigerator in the bottom that holds six large bottles of beer, it has three outlets, hot, tepid and cold. The hot outlet has a child proof  twist lock.
A water dispenser and bottled water are essential in Bali, tap water is unsafe to drink unless well boiled.

MANY RETIREES dream about an extended holiday in Bali, but are usually dissuaded by the non- extendable 30 day Visa On Arrival (VOA), but there are alternatives.
Long term stays can be very economical, if you rent a villa at a good price or even do a deal with a smaller hotel it is possible to reduce your accommodation costs to as low as Rp 100,000  (~A$ 12) per night. If you avoid the high priced tourist restaurants and eat at restaurants like our favourite Warung Sobat, two people can live like royalty for less than A$50 per day. The longer you stay the less the air ticket component becomes.
TWO MONTH STAY
For a two month stay you can apply at an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in your home country for a two month Tourist Visa. Takes one working week, costs A$65 pp.
THREE MONTH STAY
At the end of your 60 day visa, you must leave Indonesia, however like many ex-pats living in Bali you can take a break and do a VISA RUN. Traditionally people flew to either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur which with a legacy airline costs US$300+ return, however with the advent of the new Low Cost Carriers (LCC) you can do it for a fraction of the cost. JetStar fly to Singapore for around A$170 return, even cheaper on certain days. Air Asia have three flights a day to Kuala Lumpur for around A$250 return. However if you look out for specials it can be as low as A$100 return.
NEW EXCITING VISA RUNS
Now with Air Asia's new Bali hub you can do a visa run to KOTA KINABALU or to KUCHING in Malaysian Borneo and have a holiday from your holiday at very reasonable cost.
We recently purchased from Air Asia a return ticket to Kuching for only A$93 and another to Kota Kinabalu for only A$105. Stay a couple of nights, even a week, then return to Bali buying a Visa On Arrival (VOA) for US$25 giving you another 30 days in Bali.
FOUR MONTHS PLUS STAY
Make your Visa run to Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore and apply at the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate for another two month Tourist Visa. Alternatively you might like to explore more Malaysian destinations on further Visa Runs, each time returning to Bali on a VOA.

JetStar are hoping not to repeat its debacle with the Singapore-based Jetstar Asia, which has constantly needed cash injections to keep it afloat due to the stiff competition in the region. In Vietnam JetStar will have a monopoly on low cost travel which should guarantee success.

HONG KONG APRIL 8: While some airlines struggle to cope with record oil prices and weakening economic growth, others have been forced to halt their operations. The latest casualty, Oasis Hong Kong Airlines, was the fourth carrier to shut down operations world-wide in less than two weeks after a 75% increase in fuel prices over the past year. Analysts said fuel was one of the main cost components (about 30% of total operating costs). However it has since been revealed that in- fighting by the owners was the airlines down fall. The liguidators say the airline was viable. Oasis, which began flying in October 2006, ceased operations on April 8, stranding thousands of passengers in Hong Kong, Britain and Canada. Chairman and founder Raymond Lee told Bloomberg that surging oil prices had affected the airline severely. “We think AirAsia X’s decision to delay its London flights till 2009 (due  lack of A340s) is the right one due to high oil prices.
Bali Fuel Crisis
BALI: Fuel shortage have been hitting Indonesia's resort island of Bali over the last month. Motorists have left their cars and motorcycles with empty tanks on streets as many fuel outlets they came by no longer had gasoline or diesel fuel stocks, national Antara news agency reported Friday.
Filling Up in Bali
In few outlets, vehicles waiting in long lines to get more expensive fuel, high octane gasoline called Pertamax, the only fuel product available on the island. Pertamax sells at 8,300 rupiah (~A$ 1) per litre, almost double than low-octane gasoline that sells at a mere 4,500 rupiah (54 cents) per litre under government subsidy. Bali normally consumes 1.8 million litres of gasoline per day. Fuel distribution to the island is disrupted by the ongoing port renovation project at Karangasem district that impedes the arrivals of big tankers.
Mini Power Plants Plan for Bali
BALI: State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN)
plans to develop small-scale power plants in Bali to meet the rising demand for power in rural
areas. "Bali has large potential energy sources to develop small-scale hydro and wind power plants," said Hendra Saleh, spokesman PLN Bali.  He said a number of villages on Nusa Penida islands in Bali had begun developing such power plants.
Jakarta Crash
JAKARTA APRIL 27: A Cessna 207 crash landed in the grounds of Museum Purna Bahkti at Teman Mini outside Jakarta, the sole occupant, the pilot Arief Hidayat was not injured. The aircraft had departed Halim airport at 9:40am.
BALI: First week in April Ines left Bali with China Airlines of Taiwan to the USA and hometown Spokane.

The KHO UPS (Uninterruptible  Power Supply) in bits.
KHO BALI: At the KHO we have a UPS connected to our computer to cover regular power outages.
Basically the UPS is an inverter converting electricity from a 12 volt battery into 220 volt alternating current. When the mains power fails the UPS instantly (3 ms) switches in, preventing the computer from a crash and loosing unsaved data.
The UPS when new, will power the computer for about 20 mins after a power failure, but as the battery ages it can be down to 2 mins, but still enough time to save work in progress before shutting down.
Battery Expires
Our UPS is about 3 years old and recently the battery expired. We tried looking around for a replacement, but we couldn't find a battery of the same size and capacity. Then I had a brainwave, why not use a 12 volt car battery. Readily available, cheap and would increase the power up time by at
least 4-5 times. No need to close down the computer in a power outage, just keep working.
Charging
The only problem is we doubted the USP would supply enough charging current to the 12 volt car battery so we connected it to our house emergency 12 volt battery, which is constantly being charged by the house inverter.
House Supply 12 volt Battery
We removed the old battery from the UPS, drilled a hole in the back of the case and ran a cable to the house 12 volt car battery, installing a 10 ampere fuze in the line for safety.
State of the Ark
or First Sign of Senility?
As we had an old Ammeter found at the Bendigo tip, we thought why not put that in line to monitor the USB power drain from the battery.
We were surprised to find the computer draws 8 amps, turn on the monitor and it adds another 12 amps, a total of 20 amps,
If we multiply the amps drawn by the 12 volts from the battery, we get 240 Watts. Considering that the UPS is rated at 85% efficient, the computer and monitor are actually drawing about 200 watts, that's lots!.

Airline Fuel Crisis
Checked Baggage Fees from Apr 21 - Air Asia
AIR ASIA RED ALERT APR 7: Budget airline Air Asia Bhd will charge a fee for handling checked baggage for flights booked from
April 21 onwards, said Group CEO, Tony Fernandes. He said the fee was only applicable for bookings made after Apr 21. “One of the major causes is obviously fuel...
You use more fuel when the aircraft is heavier, for every bag that you checked in, we will charge RM 5 per bag, but if you buy online on the days before then we will only charge RM3 (~A$ 1.08) per bag.“
Air Asia Cartoon
Fernandes said the fee would not be imposed on customers who had already booked a flight (i.e. before April 21) and passengers travelling with only hand luggage would not be charged. He said previously, the cost of checked baggage was automatically included in the fees. “This means that those travelling with only hand luggage were subsidizing those travelling with heavier checked baggage. “Now, the guests will pay for the bags they wish to travel with,” he said.

The truth is that actually the so called discounted LIGHT FARE is the old JetSaver fare and you now pay $20 more for the JetSaver fare. Is that deceptive advertising or what? Bali Flight Scam
NEW ZEALAND: At least 10 people have been caught out by a company offering non-existent direct flights from Auckland to Bali. The company has been offering direct flights to Bali, which its website said were due to start next month, for at least $1000 return, police said. Detective Constable John Taylor of Orewa police said the legitimacy of the internet company was being investigated.
No Direct Bali-NZ Flights
"People should be very wary because there are no direct flights between Auckland and Bali, and Auckland Airport says none are scheduled in the future."  Mr Taylor would not name the company or the website as investigations were still continuing. He said police became aware of the possible scam when a couple who had booked the flights contacted them. "They said they tried to get their money back but despite email assurances from the company they still haven't seen the money." Mr Taylor said he was aware of 10 people who had paid $1000 or more on credit for the flights and hoped there were not many more caught out. "There could be hundreds, who knows."
