for friends of John and Jamal, covering
news and their life and times in Bali.
December 2008/January 2009
John, Jamal and staff of the Kerobokan Home Office,
would like to wish all our readers a very happy
Christmas and a prosperous and successful New Year.
What a bleak Christmas it will be
The Indonesian Government recently changed custom duties on alcohol and imported food and the strict enforcement of draconian food certification requirements for imported food is making it increasingly difficult in Bali to find any imported goods in the Supermarkets.

Imported Food Shortage
The Indonesian Government, in order to protect local manufacturers have had the National Food and Drug Monitoring Agency introduced complicated bureaucratic requirements for the certification and registration of imported products. Each product must then be labelled with an ingredients label in Indonesian.
Imported Food Label
This has resulted in many of our favourite imported products disappearing from the supermarket and deli shelves.
We fail to see how making it almost impossible to import such foodstuffs as butter, vegemite, tomato paste, etcetera, can help the local manufactures when these products are not manufactured in Indonesia.
Dry Holidays Ahead?
The Indonesian Government have increased wine taxes up to 350% causing restaurants and bottle shops in Bali to have little or no stock. If you do find imported wine or spirits you will be horrified by the price, a bottle os Vodka can cost as much as Rp 800,000 (A$106) or an imported medium quality Australian wine around Rp 350,000 (A$40). The problem is being blamed on the sudden closure of the "black markets" that are traditionally used to supply local demand, these suppliers managing to get alcohol into the country without paying import duty and taxes. The police, after a huge crackdown have put a halt to the trade - well for now. And this is the problem, legitimate importers are reluctant to put in big orders, in case the "black market" suddenly opens again and they are left high and dry with very expensive stock.
A Rare Sight in Bali
At Warung Sobat

At Warung Sobat and right across Bali there is a second problem.
Now that imported alcohol has dried up there is increased demand on the local winery Hatten and the beer manufacturers resulting in serious shortages. To add insult to injury Hatten have increased their prices, Hatten Rosé now Rp 85,000 (A$11.50) at Sobat, double that at other restaurants.
Leo - Very Unhappy as Jamal puts on a brave face
Beer is becoming increasingly hard to obtain and the price keeps rising. Sobat's regular supplier was out of stock last week, forcing Pak Made to run around the supermarkets buying bottles here and there.
Ines & Sheila Doing Water
To try and meet demand Hatten wines are flying in from Australia 1000 litre bladders of Margaret River grape juice and fermenting it into their new "Two Islands" brand.

KUALA LUMPUR The Malaysian Star: AIRASIA'S budget fares will go even lower with at least a 15 per cent reduction when the airline's proposed low cost terminal opens in Feb 2011. The new airport will be 20km NE of the KL International Airport, closer to Kuala Lumpur and will be able to handle 20 mill. passengers per year.
Air Asia's current low cost terminal at KLIA with the new extensions under construction will only handle 10 million passengers and will reach capacity by March 2009. A senior AirAsia official said "the air line's plan was always to look for a cheaper venue to lower costs as it
was paying about RM100 million  (S$42.2 million) in airport fees yearly at KLIA - they are charging us too much" he said. The Malaysian Cabinet has given the greenlight for the new RM1.6 billion airport to be developed under a private finance initiative between  Sime Darby Bhd and AirAsia on a 2,800ha plot in Labu.
Closer to the nation's capital than the current  terminal, a 7km link to the North, South Expressway is planned, along with an Express Rail Link to KLIA. We will provide shuttles between the main terminal and LCCT.
"The road and rail links between KLIA and the new LCCT would also be privately financed," the AirAsia official said.
He also said the cost of operating the new airport would be lowered by incorporating advanced technology and without government bureaucracy.
"The airport will be built entirely by us. The latest technology and better retail facilities will mean more money. More money will mean lower airport tax and fares."
Jamal's Monster Back Wall Mural
After many requests over the years Jamal finally got inspired and commenced painting a mural on the inside back wall of the KHO. Currently only half finished and yet to have trees added the mural is a huge 5 x 2.5 meters. For over two weeks Jamal has commenced work at 6am every morning to try and get it finished before we depart on January 6 for our summer holiday in Thailand.

After failed merger talks with BA, seems Qantas have been talking to Tony Fernandes.
Dec. 23 (Bloomberg) -- AirAsia Bhd., Southeast Asia’s biggest discount airline, may be in exploratory talks for a possible merger with Jetstar, the Star reported, citing people it didn’t identify. Chief executives of both airlines talked about the idea last week, the newspaper said. AirAsia’s Chief Executive Officer Tony
Fernandes declined to confirm or  deny the plan, saying only the  company is always talking and looking at ways to strengthen AirAsia, the report said, citing Fernandes. Alan Joyce, chief executive officer of Qantas Airways Ltd., the parent of Jetstar, wasn’t available for comment, the newspaper said. Qantas, Australia’s biggest airline, may pursue a deal with Asian carriers after the collapse of merger talks with British Airways Plc, according to Credit Suisse Group AG last week.

Friends Herman & Nini Visit From Jakarta
After lunch at Warung Pantai L-R Leo, Herman, Jamal Erik & Erna, Nini already left for shopping and John is behind the camera.
Herman and his wife Nini were in town over the weekend celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary They flew down from Jakarta Friday afternoon staying that night and Saturday night in Ubud, then Sunday they came to the KHO at 12:30 and we took them down to Warung Pantai for lunch.
Warung Pantai is a new little restaurant on the beach, hard to get a seat there now at lunchtime so we sent Erik ahead at 11:50 to secure a table. Herman and Nini both enjoyed so much sitting there with the sea view.
Just after we finished our meal, Nini's younger sister arrived. She is a doctor and works in the Police Hospital in Denpasar, she moved here from Jakarta a year ago. Her husband originally from Lombok, owns a Honda dealership in Denpasar. Herman and Nini's flight was not until 17:50, so Nini went off with her sister shopping for gifts to take home. Erna left to go and see the boys at Caligula while Herman, Leo, Jamal, Erik and myself ordered some beer. At 16:30 we left feeling very happy after a pleasant Sunday afternoon.
Massive Rabies Inoculation Underway
Bali News: Tempo Interactive reports that a team of 200 veterinarians assisted by hundred of students from Bali's Udayana University undertook a mass vaccination of local dogs in Kuta and South Kuta commencing on Saturday, December 20, 2008. The anti-rabies vaccination teams were deployed at 72 points to treat 9,000 dogs. According to Badung's Livestock, Fishery and Maritime  chief, I Made Badra, a total of 11,000  dogs have been immunized that's 85% of the targeted dog population. Following the treatment blitz, local officials will continue to monitor the condition of the treated dogs for three months. Funding for the program is being provided by the government of Bali, the U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization and the Australian government.
Ines Goggle Eyed About Her New Villa
Ines is all goggle eyed about finally completing the plans of her new villa in Bali. She has purchased a huge plot of land just south of Tanalot. The access road is almost complete, the electricity is almost connected and the workers have almost started laying the foundations. Each day Ines can be seen hanging around all the building supply shops sourcing materials for her new villa. Construction will take ages but it definitely be will be ready in July, but we are not sure what year.

RECESSIONOMICS
Jamal's Grand Nephew Erik
At the KHO we are always looking at ways to save money, the latest one is to buy rice in bulk. The economics are not stunning but we eventually do save some money and we have a whole lot better  quality of rice. We bought a 25 kg bag of Super Quality Putri Sejati
rice grown in Banyuwang, Java.
Normally kitchen boss Erik buys rice by the kilo from the local shop, of course it is never 1 kilo, usually 800gm to help the shops profit.
Eric always bought the cheapest quality rice @ Rp 7,000/kilo (A$.92c). The 25 kg bag cost Rp 130,000 (A$ 17.10) that works out at Rp 5,000/kg (A$.68c). A saving of Rp 2,000/kg (A$.24). that would cost A$/kilo, we got 25 Kg for A$16.45 that works out at A$ 6.6c/kg so by buying the bag we saved A$5.80.
But then we had to buy a new 25 litre green environmentally friendly plastic bucket to store the rice. and that cost A$ 8.22, so we ended up minus A$ 2.42, as I said the economics are not that great, but the kitchen will not fall into recession with two successive months of negative growth, next month we should show a slight profit of A$ 3.38, then the following  month our efforts will be rewarded with the full saving of A$ 5.80 per month. That's a whopping A$ 69.60 per year, enough to buy another AirAsia ticket.
Indonesian plastic is unique in that, especially if left in the sun, it automatically bio-degrades into plastic flaked in no time.

These happy kids suffer a disability, but one they are not even aware of, un-like most western kids they have no access to a computer.
We could say ignorance is bliss, but we all know knowledge and education is the most essential thing for us to have a peaceful world. Currently the Internet penetration rate is only 2% and only 9% of Indonesians have internet access. (Australia 74.3%) Low telephone line density, high timed local call charges and low PC penetration are all significant obstacles.
One Computer
Per Family
One Indonesian company ZYREX is trying to change all that with a their campaign of "One Computer Per Family programme", releasing a range of low cost computers aimed at kids and teenagers. Of course with the base model costing US$269 it is still beyond the poorer Indonesian families , with half the Indonesia population of 240 million surviving on less than US$2/ day.
BASICS
There are three models in the Zyrex ANOA computer range, although they look like laptops none of them have batteries, they run off mains power through an adapter.
Zyrex ANOA 212 US$269

We continue a special series on Indonesian National Heroes. Visitors to Bali will be familiar with many of the names as many streets are named after them. Often not even the locals know exactly who the heroes are and what they did.
Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II
Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II (Raden Hasan) was born to the Royal family of Palembang in 1768 in Palembang in South Sumatra.
Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II
In his younger days Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II studied the Al Koran (the sacred writings of Muhammad), h became quite an expert. He was engaged in fighting with the Dutch and English which went on for 3 days and 3 nights, destroying the war ships Eendracht and Ajax and captured Generals Schubert and Wolterbeek from Batavia (now Jakarta).
Later General Baron de Kock arrived with a larger force from Batavia but again failed to defeat Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II. After he won three times against the Dutch the Dutch invited him aboard a war ship for peace talks, it was a trick and he was arrested and taken to Batavia, later he was exiled to the Sulewesi island of Ternate more then 2,500 km from Palambang, where he stayed until his death on the 22nd of  November 1852.
Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II is much honoured in Indonesia as a freedom fighter against the Colonial Dutch occupation.
