The Ogoh-Ogoh's burn as we celebrate Nyepi Eve in Warung Sobat
L-R Andi, John, Ines, Robert and Allen
Nyepi - Bali Closed
BALI: From dawn on the 7th until dawn on the 8th of March Bali came to a complete standstill to observe Nyepi, the Balinese New Year..
During the period no one can leave their house, go on the streets or show any light at night.
On that day the Balinese believe that the ancestor spirits try to return, but by everybody staying indoors and showing no lights, the spirits, think they must have the wrong place and keep flying.
AIRPORT CLOSED
The island's international Ngurah Rai airport was closed while shops were
shuttered and streets deserted apart from the traditional guards (Pecalang) tasked with enforcing the silence.
A Pecalang
Some Balinese don't cook, eat or talk on the day, however others have a hidden Tv, eat pre-prepared food and chat quietly with family.
NYEPI EVE
NYEPI EVE is a complete contrast, when at dusk the Balinese parade their devil spirit characters made over the last month from paper mache from their Banjar to the beach where they are burnt, ridding Bali of evil spirits. However before the procession people walk around their house striking a gong to chase the evil spirits out.
Pak Made's wife Kadek, Ketut and Jamal chase away the evil spirits from Warung Sobat
At dusk people started gathering to watch the procession outside Warung Sobat. At 7pm they departed with young girls leading with fire torches, followed by the Ogoh-Ogoh's and a Balinese band.

the Ogoh-Ogoh's are burnt. The Batu Belig kids bought their Ogoh-Ogoh  back to Batu Belig beach to be burnt. I think they feel the closer to home the better.

We had a great night celebrating Nyepi Eve at Warung Sobat, we arrived early at 5:30pm to avoid the traffic. It appeared when we left, we were the only people in our compound staying for Nyepi, seems everyone fled Bali. We don't understand why non-Balinese are so scared of Nyepi.
Jamal & Erik -  No Cars
(Erik is Jamal's 21 yo. nephew, who is staying with us from Bandung)
Warung Sobat closed at 10 PM so the staff could return to their villages before the midnight curfew.

We stayed on after the staff left finishing our drinks and chatting.
With no Taxi's available, Allen
hitched a ride home with Andi and a bottle of Hatten on a motor bike.

At The KHO
MANY PEOPLE say Nyepi is boring. Well it certainly wasn't at the KHO.
We skipped breakfast and instead John made real Aussie Hamburgers for an early lunch.
Nyepiburger
Jamal was wrapped, "memories of Australia" he said, so was Erik, he had never had a REAL hamburger before. After that we were running around covering the windows for the blackout night. Nyepi is always
Windows Light Proofed
held on a new moon. It is pitch black, even the slightest light shows. We then set up our portable dining table in the light proof guest room for Nyepi dinner at 8 PM.
Dining Nyepi Style
On Nyepi Eve Pak Made had very kindly dropped over an Ayam Betutu (Balinese chicken roasted in banana leaves). This we decided to have for Nyepi night dinner, all we had to do was make a salad to go with it. However we decided we would make something special for desert. I decided to teach Erik how to make Apple Pie, which he did successfully under supervision.
Erik's Apple Pie
Erik went mad when it came to decorating the pie and came up with this interesting design.
Erik's Man in the Pie
Which was somewhat wrecked after we added the cinnamon topping.
By dusk all was complete and we settled down to watch the 2007 Academy Award winning "No Country for Old Men", we all found it totally boring. I'd rather watch a Hitchcock any day, perhaps the Coen Brothers should too.
After dinner we watched Tv for a while, then we all we all had an early night. I was up at dawn to observe the end of Nyepi and turn every single light in the house on.

Bali Travel Warning
"If it's fine for Kenya, why not for Bali?"
CLICK HERE - Current Indonesian/Bali advice
DENPASAR: Little Bali Hotel & Resort Company founding member Adrian Forsyth has again called on DFAT (Australian Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade) to rethink its current Bali travel advisory.
Forsyth’s comments follow the DFAT decision last week to downgrade its warning level on Kenya from level 4 ‘reconsider your need to travel’  to Level 3 (exercise a) ‘high degree of caution’. The DFAT ruling on Kenya follows the cessation of recent political unrest in January, resulted in the deaths of more than 1000 people. Forsyth said he and other Bali operators were shell shocked at the speed with which the Kenya advisory had been downgraded. "The Australian government attitude towards Bali continues to amaze us all,” he said. “Just last December Bali hosted the United Nations conference on climate change involving heads of state and government ministers and including the new Australian PM Kevin Rudd. “If it is safe enough for
Mr Rudd to come here, why the DFAT warning." Forsyth said " it was ironic that while the current level four advisory had stood in place for several years, Bali was now receiving more

bottoms"
Australian visitors than at any other time. A great deal of work and resources continued to be poured into Bali’s key tourist areas in order to make the destination as safe as possible. Bali has invested heavily to make the destination much safer,” he said. “Local authorities regularly sweep all local residential areas to ensure that all people living in the area have the right to be there and police posts and vehicle inspection points have been erected on many streets entering Kuta and Legian. Local community based security team numbers have also been increased.  The local Police Force has devised and instigated a security audit for all hotels which has now been running for 4 years."
Aussie Tourists Up 70%
Official Indonesian government statistics show Australian arrivals  for Jan. to Dec. 2007 increased 70% from 117,969 to 204,421.
Dengue Fever in Bali
BALI: Due to the protracted rainy season this year, the mosquito's are breeding in vast amounts resulting in an increase in mosquito borne diseases, especially Dengue Fever.
The mosquito that carries Dengue fever is know as the Tiger Mosquito (Aedes Aegypti)
Although three people have already died from Dengue fever in Bali recently it is survivable if you are in good health. Taking precautions with a good repellent and spraying bedrooms in the evening greatly reduce the risk of infection. Major hotels also "Fog" daily.

BALI: In the middle of March, Robert and Wiwin invited us to their mountain retreat for the week-end. Their property is on the side of a mountain, looking over the north coast of Bali and Singaraja.

The hill is so steep that you enter from the carpark at first floor level. At around 4,500 ft above MSL it is

The environment is wonderful, one
minute the sun is shining and you can see for miles, the next cloud drifts across obscuring everything. Being rainy season, the mountain flowers are in full bloom.

Kota Kinabalu is very scenic and a favorite destination for adventure seekers, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts and holiday makers. Locally referred to as KK, Kota Kinabalu must not be missed.
Kuching, which literally means “cat” in Malay, is the capital of Sarawak on the banks of the Sarawak River. The former home of the White Raja's, Kuching is an interesting city, with beautiful landscaped gardens and gracious old world charm.

Erik Gets His First
Motor Bike License
Recently Jamal took Erik down to the Police to get him his first ever motor bike license (SIM). All that
was required was him to have his photo taken, supply photo copies of his Indonesian national ID
card (KTP), his Bali residency permit and pay a fee of Rp 200,000 (A$23.)
He was not required to do any kind of test after the policeman asked him, "how long have you been riding?", Erik answered "since I was 16", the policeman said "that's 5 years - you should be ok, we wont worry about a test."
In a surprisingly short time Erik had his first brand new motor bike SIM.

REUTERS MELBOURNE MAR 26: Malaysian discount airline AirAsia X
is understood to be considering an Australia - London return
fare that could be as low as A$1000 plus $575 average Australian  tax.
A$1,575 Full Return
The proposed ticket price, which excludes taxes or charges, would be about one-third of the prices (normal economy fare) charged by larger rivals such as Qantas Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates and British Airways, and would pose a challenge to Qantas' low-cost offshoot, JetStar Airways.
Melbourne-London
QANTAS $2,698
SINGAPORE $2,616
MALAYSIAN $2,579

Air Asia X Stakeholders
AirAsiaX is a separate company from AirAsia, investors include Richard Branson, Robert Milton (50% owner of Air Canada), Datuk* Tony Fernandes (Air Asia founder), Datuk* Kamarudin Meranun and Lim Kian Onn. Obviously all these people believe this new low cost long range model will revolutionize long haul travel.

15 More Airbus 330's
KUALA LUMPUR MAR 26: AirAsiaX said Tuesday it would buy 10 more new Airbus 330-300's for $2.1B, bringing orders to 25 aircraft.
Airbus A-330-300
The Airbus 330-300 is a stretched version of the 200 model used by JetStar. The A-330 can be crammed
with 400+ economy seats and  can fly to London, with one stop from Kuala Lumpur. Some reports indicate AAX is looking to lease two long range, Airbus A-340's for the London run, although other reports say AAX will use the necessary refueling stop to open up markets in the Gulf. The A-340 is identical to the A-330 except it has four engines rather than two, giving it very long range capabilities, it hasn't been a big success with only 360 delivered, airlines preferring the maintenance cost of 2 engines rather than four.

Bali Power Blackouts
RECENTLY BALI was hit by a wave of electricity black-outs, caused by a black coal shortages in Java.
World's Largest Coal Producer
Ironic when we consider Indonesia is the worlds number one thermal coal exporter. The recent hikes in oil prices is putting more and more pressure on the coal supply as a substitute, causing prices to increase from from US$91 per ton in Jan. to
US$132 per ton today an increase of 45% in the past 3 months. Due to the increasing international demand domestic supplies have dwindled causing the power outages.
Easter in Indonesia
MANY TOURISTS VISITING BALI and Indonesia are surprised to find that in the world's most populous Muslim country that Good Friday is a national public holiday, in fact Indonesia has more Christian holidays than most countries, not only Good Friday and Christmas Day, the country closes down for The Ascension of Jesus Christ.
Easter Procession in Indonesia
In its preamble, the 1945 Indonesian constitution sets forth the Pancasila as the embodiment of  five basic principles of an independent Indonesian state. The first principal states "The state shall be based on the belief in the one and only God". Therefore in Indonesia other religion's holidays are observed.

No longer "Fun is in the Air" for Adam Air, grounded by Indonesian Air Transport from midnight Mar 20, over safety concerns. "They must fix their capability within three months or have their AOC (Air Operator Certificate) revoked," said spokesman Bambang Erfan. Adam Air have had 12 of their fleet of 20 B-737's repossessed, they also couldn't  pay their insurance bill.
Adam Air B-737-400 in Batam
The airline has suffered many accidents and incidents, the latest on March 10 when Flight 292, a Boeing 737-400 skidded off the runway in Batam, all survived but the aircraft is a write-off.
Incidents and Accidents
2006: At least one plane skidded off a runway, and two others flew on with serious gear malfunctions when they should instead have made emergency landings.
2006 Feb 11: Flight 782, registration number PK-KKE, lost navigational and communications systems 20 minutes into a flight from Jakarta to Makassar. The plane was subsequently flown into a radar "black spot" and was lost for hours, later landing at Tambolaka Airport over 1000km off course.
2007 Jan 1, air traffic controllers lost contact with flight 574 en route. The Aircraft, PK-KKW, had 96 passengers and 6 crew. On January 10, parts of the aircraft's tail stabilizer were found 300m offshore. The flight recorders and suspected debris have been located, but may not be recovered due to a dispute between Adam Air and the Indonesian Government over who should pay recovery costs.
Ouch! PK-KKV at Surabaya
2007 Feb 21: Adam Air Flight 172 a Boeing 737-300 flying from Jakarta to Surabaya, had a hard landing at Juanda International Airport. The incident caused the body of the plane to break in the middle. No serious injuries reported.
Indonesian Air Safety
WHY NO ONE CARES
Firstly Indonesia is an archipelago of 17,508 islands, the only surface transport between islands is by very old, very slow, rusty car ferries that sink at an alarming rate.
Dec 29, 2006 The Senopati Nusantara sank off Java with more than 500 missing.
To travel  say from Timor to Jakarta can take a week. On the larger islands the roads are very poor and congested. Travel by broken down
A bus crash near Jakarta
old buses is slow and dangerous, many roll over and suffer head on collisions, multitudes die every year. Bali to Jakarta a distance of ~1,000Km takes over 24 hours by bus. In the past, the well to do could fly with Garuda or Merpati, the others just had to take the risk and suffer the horror journey.
Low Cost Carriers Arrive
A few years back many Indonesian entrepreneurs, jumped on the Low Cost Carrier bandwaggon. Old aircraft no longer able to fly in the west because of new noise rules could be leased at very low rates. They offered Indonesians fares often close to ground transport and a journey time of an hour or so, against days. Sure the planes were a bit battered, but compared to the busses and ferries, this was first class. Now and again the planes crashed,  but most non-fatal, an acceptable risk against drowning, dying in a bus crash or not going at all. The cash strapped airlines often cut costs on maintenance to keep their fares low, they know, if the fares increase they would loose their market. We must remember Indonesia is a developing country, one day when their economy is at the level of the west, they too will be able to afford safe transport .

TWO ISLANDS
Two New Wines from Hatten
HATTEN WINES have introduced two new wines to Bali under the brand label of Two Islands signifying that the grape juice is produced in the island of Australia and the fermentation and cellaring of the wine takes place on the island of Bali. Interesting to note that there is no reference to the Hatten on the new wine label, perhaps they are trying to distance the new product from the Hatten Brand.
The new wines a Chardonnay and Shiraz, are made from grape juice imported from Australia, then fermented in Bali at Hatten's winery - thus avoiding the import duty on alcohol.
From the KHO wine critic
The "Two Islands" Chardonnay is pleasant but a little too sweet, the Shiraz again pleasant but no body . However considering the price of imported wines in Bali "Two Islands" should do well. "Two Islands" is available at Warung Sobat for Rp120,000 (~A$14.45).
Hatten's New Vigneron
MELBOURNE-BORN Don Buchanan has been appointed as Managing Director of Hatten Wines, he has had a life-time affiliation
with the wine industry in Australian and abroad, working for Lindeman, Leo Buring, and Kaiser Stuhl to name a few. Among his many awards are the awards are the Bacchus Trophy; Qantas Trophy and the The Red Wine Awards from Jimmy Watson Red Wine Award.
The Wings Corp.
Although we often hear negative stories about Indonesian
manufacturers there is a growing list of successful companies that make good products. One such company is WINGS makers of economical household cleaning products.
WINGS - Over 200 Products
WINGS Corporation was founded in 1948 in Surabaya and over the
last fifty years have grown from a small home industry into a market leader employing thousand of people in factories in Jakarta and Surabaya.
Since 1948
The first product was handmade green laundry soap in the late 1940's. Soon after, they pioneered cream detergent to this day one of the most popular multi-purpose washing aids in Indonesia.
At The KHO
We exclusively use WINGS BOOM washing powder, it's great in cold water and costs Rp 5,500 (~A$ 66 cents) for a large 700 Gram Pak.
Erik  ironing in the

Wings products are very popular, are always cheaper than International brands and help keep Indonesian money in Indonesia.
BALI'S PROVISIONAL House of Representatives has proposed a Rp10,000 (~A$1.20)  "donation" from departing international tourists at Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport. The central Jakarta government has rejected the idea on the basis that it would hurt the tourism industry. Currently tourists pay a Rp 150,000 (~A$18) departure tax, plus a US$25 Visa-On-Arrival fee which by-passes Bali and goes straight to the Jakarta Government. The Balinese feel they deserve a share.
Garuda to Return
to Amsterdam
INDONESIA'S DIRECTOR General of Air Communications, Budhi Suyitno, has asked Garuda Indonesia to begin preparing the infrastructure for resuming air service between Bali and Amsterdam.  The Government feels that planning the resumption of flights will expedite lifting the current Black Ban on Indonesian aircraft entering European airspace due to maintenance and old aircraft worries. Garuda feels that by using newly ordered Boeing 777's on the route the ban could be lifted.

New Bird Found
MARCH 18, 2008 (National Geographic): There's a reason why the Togian white-eye is so elusive, there just aren't many of the tiny yellow-green birds left.
Since 1997, field biologists on Indonesia's Togian Islands in Sulawesi have gotten only fleeting glimpses of the brilliantly colored creature. So when a team led by biologist Mochamad Indrawan finally secured a specimen, they sent the dead animal to Pamela Rasmussen, a well-known ornithologist at Michigan State University who confirmed that it is a new species. The white-eye is part of a group of similar birds that inhabit Indonesia's remote tropical regions. But unlike its relatives, the newfound bird has no white coloring across its eyes and sings a higher-pitched, more lilting song.
Curbing Avian Flu
DENPASAR Mar 20 (ANTARA News): Bali`s provincial administration is making maximum efforts in preventing and overcoming the spread of bird flu (avian influenza - AI) in its territory.  Among the efforts was the preparation of existing laboratories including those of the Udayana University`s Medical
Faculty and Sanglah General Hospital to prioritize the testing of blood of suspected bird flu sufferers, Governor Dewa Beratha said.
Gov. Beratha
The administration had also formed integrated bird flu mitigation teams and quick-response teams at district/municipal level. In addition, the local government had also set up a coordinated team consisting of animal husbandry, public health, animal quarantine, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and veterinary service officers as well as AI surveillance units to curb the spread of AI in Bali, Beratha said. He continued to say that the Bali administration had also banned the entry of fowl from other regions.

KHO Book Review
WHEN I WAS IN LONDON in the mid 80's I would often visit Foyles bookstore in Charing Cross Road.
One time I found a book on Noel Cowards life by his secretary Cole Lesley. The book I thoroughly
enjoyed, especially the hilarious stories and quotes. The book was published in the UK with the title "Remembered Laughter" and in the rest of the
world as "The Life of Noel Coward". Somewhere over the years I lost the book, however last time I was I Australia I found a copy in a second hand bookstore in Bendigo. I am currently re-reading it and
enjoying it as much if not more than before. The book covers his
entire life which as Noel describes as "fabulously enjoyable". Starting from his childhood, we travel through through his professional years to his retirement at Firefly Hill in
Noel, age 2
Jamaica. He died March 25, 1973 age 73. He is buried on Firefly Hill.
